The world loves chocolate which is made from cocoa beans (可可豆). Unfortunately, this love is hurting rain forests in Africa. Some cocoa beans are grown in areas where rain forests should be. Cocoa farmers have been cutting down these forests. Many forests are disappearing because of deforestation. Some forests are protected and it is against the law to cut down trees in protected forests.

Most of the world’s cocoa beans come from two countries in West Africa. These countries are Ivory Coast and Ghana. Ivory Coast and Ghana also have the biggest problems with deforestation. Mighty Earth is a group that works to protect the environment. It worries what will happen if nothing changes. The group said Ivory Coast’s forests could be gone by 2030.

Salam Sawadougou is a cocoa farmer in Ivory Coast. His farm is in the Mount Tia protected forest. His farm has no more big trees. Only gray tree stumps (樹樁) remain. “I burned it little by little,” Sawadougou says. He explained that his cocoa needed full sun to grow.

Meanwhile, scientists say farmers will miss the trees. Their shade would have protected the cocoa plants from increasingly dry seasons. The dry seasons are the result of cutting down the forests. Sadly, farmers do not have many choices. They do not make much money because many farmers are paid too little. Most cannot even afford to buy a bar of chocolate.

    C. Cocoa farmers want to help save the rain forests.

    D. Cocoa farmers have no choice but to cut down trees for cocoa plants to grow.

    68. What’s the main idea of the passage?

    A. More and more farmers in Africa grow cocoa plants.

    B. People’s love for chocolate is causing harm to the rain forests in Africa.

    C. The number of poor farmers in Africa is larger and larger.

    D. The popularity of chocolate is increasing.
